The bigger pond at Rt. 2 — it has a name, Yates Pond — has iced over.
This is the pathway along its shore, below the highway embankment.
Outfall CAM #401A has a thin film of ice on its surface at the point where it enters the Little River.
The Little River’s flood plain is opening up bit by bit as the cattails freeze and bend in the wind. They’re still standing, though, and the tiny seeds still fly from their heads at the slightest touch and stick to my clothing.
On the river itself, a heron flies away
and smaller birds pass over as the sky darkens.
It’s time to head home.
